Weigh stations are commonplace along interstates. In some situations, you may see signs saying all trucks must enter the next weigh station. If you are not familiar with large trucks, you may wonder why truck weight is so important.
According to the Georgia Department of Public Safety, one of the main reasons why truck weight is so important is because it dictates the regulations on the truck. There are many variables about a truck that determines at what weight it is under regulation and what regulations apply.
GVWR
The gross vehicle weight rating is the weight of the truck when it is carrying a load. It includes the weight of everything in and on the truck, such as fuel and people. The manufacturer sets the GVWR. It is only part of what leads a truck t face regulations. The other aspect that affects regulation status is if you use the truck for business.
Regulations
The state sets a maximum for the GVWR, which is 80,000 pounds in most cases. This means drivers cannot drive a truck on public roads that weighs over this maximum limit without being subject to fines and penalties.
If a person’s truck weighs over 10,001 pounds, he or she must meet requirements for medical qualification and must also undergo a medical exam. This size truck also must have a US DOT number and follow hours of service laws.
Other regulations include things such as keeping time records, having a fire extinguisher on the truck, not using radar detector equipment and undergoing regular inspections. Drivers must know the regulations and follow them or face penalties.
